2008 Books

Jessica & I have been tabulating the books we’ve read in 2008. She came up with 11, I’ve only got 7:

  1. Sent: Living the Missional Nature of the Church by Ed Stetzer (should be nearly finished by the end of the year)
  2. Do Hard Things by Alex & Brett Harris (good, but a little too social-justice oriented for me to be super-excited about it)
  3. Holiness By Grace by Bryan Chapell (great theology, but so thickly written it was a bit of a chore to get through it)
  4. Bauckham’s, JND Kelly’s & Hiebert’s detailed exegetical commentaries on 2 Peter (read a good chunk of each, I figured together they counted as 1 book)
  5. Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis (ok, so it’s an easy, fun book — those count too!)
  6. Scarlet by Stephen R. Lawhead (also fun, part of a Robin Hood trilogy)
  7. The Lively Art of Writing (excellent book, recommended by Mrs. Jordan)

Of course, that doesn’t count the books I’ve started:

  1. Robert Ballard’s Bismark: Germany’s Greatest Battleship Surrenders Her Secrets
  2. Dune by Frank Herbert (one of the few fiction authors whose writing style I very much admire)
  3. The Gospel & Personal Evangelism by Mark Dever (excellent so far, forward by C.J. Mahaney)
  4. How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth by Gordon Fee & Douglas Stuart (I really like this book so far)
  5. Shepherding a Child’s Heart by Ted Tripp
  6. Age of Opportunity by Paul David Tripp (on parenting teens – wrote a promotional article for it in the TFC newsletter)

How about you? What have you been reading?

Ted Dekker. I’ve been mostly reading his books.
Have you picked up Eragon yet? =)

  2. Peter Rust says:

I read an excerpt from Dekker’s Sinner recently. Which one are you in now?

ARG, I haven’t! I’ve just read the first three chapters that are online. I totally need to, though, as made obvious by my misunderstanding about dragons at the TFC party. Maybe Jessica can request it at the library.

  3. Hey, glad to hear you are reading Sent: Living the Missional Nature of the Church. I’m on the Threads team (http://www.threadsmedia.com), which released the study. We would love to hear your feedback. Have you seen the Ed Stetzer vs. Al videos? Looks like you follow Ed’s blog so, you probably have. Look forward to hearing from you. Have a Merry Christmas!

I just finished Skin and Adam by Ted Dekker. I’m not reading anything at the moment though…

Yes! You totally should have Jessica request it. It’s my favorite book in the world! Murtagh is awesome!

    What are you reading now?

  5. Peter Rust says:

Together, Jessica & I are working through Dune again. On my own, I’m finishing up Sent: Living the Missional Nature of the Church and then there’s another missional book I have “on deck” that I need to read next.

Next month I’ll be going through Tim Keller’s “Reasons for God” with my church which I’ve heard is excellent from a number of people. He’s also connected to the missional movement, so I’m very much looking forward to it.

    Jenny,

Thanks so much for dropping by! I just took a deeper look at threadsmedia.com – looks like you’ve got some good stuff going. I skimmed through the sample Collegiate and will read through the Bible study there.

I’m actually mid-way working through the Sent guide with two groups right now – both our Staff (young adult leadership) and Ministry Team (high school leadership). I do have some feedback, I’ll take some time to articulate it well and send it your way.

I haven’t (yet) watched the Ed vs Al videos. My laptop’s hard drive crashed a week ago and I have been (slowly) getting things back to normality – I haven’t re-subscribed to most of my blogs yet.
